We work closely with our global men's health partners to ensure collaboration, transparency and accountability for every project we fund. We monitor this through report cards which detail what we seek to achieve, key measures and the impact.
Prostate Cancer
"Together with the brightest minds in research, we aim to achieve significant breakthroughs in the hope of beating prostate cancer. Our disruptive funding approach identifies revolutionary ways to accelerate health outcomes by creating strong, global collaborative teams." Dr. Colleen Nelson, Global Scientific Chair.
Men's Health
"One Mo can help change the face of men’s health through the powerful conversations created globally during Movember. Men have the chance to confidently discuss men’s health with people around them, resulting in men taking action early, helping change and save lives." Paul Villanti, Executive Director, Programmes
Mental health and suicide prevention
“The number of men taking their own lives around the world is one of the biggest challenges of our time. Movember is working to ensure all men and boys look after their mental health and are comfortable to seek help when they’re struggling.”
Brendan Maher, Global Director, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.
Testicular Cancer
“Despite being the 2nd most common cancer in young men, testicular cancer is often a forgotten cancer due to early detection and treatment. Our projects look at underinvested areas such as improving access to healthcare services and treatment options for relapse” Paul Villanti, Executive Director, Programmes.

What we seek to achieve

The vision of this project is to be the ‘go to’ training resource for clinicians across the world seeking to (a) understand the needs and preferences of men, (b) gain training to better understand and respond to men's distress, (c) increase their confidence and competence in engaging with male client's, and (d) provide a gate way to Movember’s other tools, resources to stay mentally healthy and well.

About the project

Even though the rate of men seeking psychological treatment has increased significantly in the last decade, men still account for approximately 75% of suicides. Over 60% of men who complete suicide have sought treatment in the year prior to their death.  Men specifically experience higher early dropout rates and attend less sessions meaning they do not always get the help they need. One reason for this is that many clinicians are not provided with any training related to gender and men’s needs and preferences when engaging in help seeking. This leads to lower levels of confidence and competence of clinicians in engaging with men which has an adverse impact on men’s experience of care, and ultimately their health outcomes.
Put simply, traditional treatment approaches may be missing the mark with many men.  To maximise the benefits of encouraging men to take action when times get tough we first need to keep them engaged in treatment. We need to leverage principles that work for men and incorporate these into the way traditional treatments are delivered. Specifically, we need to train clinicians to provide treatment that men connect with, through a gendered-lens, to get them back on track sooner. The program will involve the building of an evidence base around men’s and clinicians needs, and the development and testing of training for clinicians to improve their skills in treating men. The overall outcome will be men and boys receiving the treatment they want and need from gender competent clinicians and improvements in their engagement rates.
